Building on the successful rollout of cashless payment solutions for Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), Sacombank continues its partnership with the HCMC Department of Transportation to expand the open-loop payment model across the city’s entire bus network. This modern solution enables passengers to pay for their travel with a single tap using various methods - including bank cards, e-wallets, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, QR codes, and more.
Currently, Mastercard and Visa cardholders - regardless of their issuing bank, domestic or international - can pay for bus fares via POS devices installed on buses. By May 2025, the system is expected to support additional cards, including NAPAS, JCB, UnionPay, and American Express.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Sacombank’s efforts to help HCMC develop modern, integrated public transportation payment systems. The goal is to build a transportation ecosystem that seamlessly connects various modes of travel - from metro lines and buses to water buses, electric buggies, and public bicycles. In addition to providing convenient, efficient, and cost-effective mobility solutions, the system encourages a shift from private vehicles to public transit, contributing to a greener, smarter, and more sustainable urban environment.
The adoption of electronic ticketing also streamlines operational processes, eliminating the need for printed paper tickets or plastic cards. This significantly reduces waste associated with traditional ticketing, conserves natural resources, and helps mitigate environmental pollution. The move to a cashless model aligns with Vietnam’s national strategy for digital economic development and promotes environmentally responsible consumption.
Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the HCMC Department of Transportation, speaking at the launch event.
At the event, Sacombank introduced the Sacombank Mastercard MultiPass, a payment card offering exclusive benefits for public transport users. MultiPass cardholders enjoy a flat bus fare of VND 5,000 per trip and Metro Line 1 fares capped at VND 10,000 per journey. Additionally, users receive a 5% discount when purchasing bus ticket packages with the card. These practical incentives aim to encourage widespread adoption of safe, economical, and environmentally friendly public transport.
To meet the needs of students, Sacombank plans to offer a 50% bus fare discount for student cardholders. Notably, during the campaign's first month, customers using the MultiPass card will receive a 100% cashback on bus fare payments. Customers can choose to open either a physical or virtual MultiPass card via the Sacombank Pay or Multigo apps throughout April.
Speaking at the launch, a representative from the HCMC Department of Transportation stated: “The implementation of the open-loop payment system for buses not only drives digital transformation but also marks a significant milestone in mobilizing resources, enhancing management efficiency, and delivering tangible benefits to residents. This is a practical step toward positioning Ho Chi Minh City as a smart and sustainably developed urban center.”
